She froze where she stood.
Her heartbeat quickened in her chest as a cold sweat mixed with the river's water that still trickled down her forehead.
She had been spotted.
After all the precautions that she had taken, the spell and enchantments that she had used, she had still been spotted. The world could be a cold and indifferent place for an elemental like her.
The stories, all of the dark and gruesome stories her mother had told her about mortal men flashed through her anxious and fearful mind. If those stories were right than mortal men were not still above indulging in the occasional act of cruelty.
Slowly, tentatively she turned around, bracing herself for the worst...
...what she saw caught her off guard.
Standing by the waters edge was a young child,a boy of no more than five years old, a boy with a wild main of bright fiery red hair.
His emerald green eyes were open wide and his little mouth was ajar as he stared at her.
"Wow..." he gasped as a slight smile crossed his lips. "How did the water make you so pretty?"
